Under the Australian Research Council's Discovery Projects scheme, UON received $9.4 million for 24 UON lead projects. The Faculty of Science and IT received 25% of the total funding that went to Discovery projects at UON.

For example, in 2013 there were almost 4000 applications submitted to the NHMRC, approximately 600 of which gained funding (17%).
