In addition to support offered through the University of Newcastle, the Faculty of Science and Information Technology has in place a range of scholarships, fellowships and funding to support our researchers as they endeavor to contribute to our world-class innovation.

Staff Research Support Schemes

The Faculty of Science and Information Technology offers a broad range of research support schemes to encourage and foster research for academic staff.The Faculty Research & Research Training Committee (FRRTC) is responsible for managing the research support schemes listed below.

PVC Conference Assistance Scheme

Funding support for academics to attend 'International Conferences'. Academics may apply for up to $2000 per year.

Early Career Academic (ECA) Program

Outlines the Faculty definition of an ECA and the eligibility criteria for ECA funding.

Early Career Academic (PhD Holder) Research Plan

ECAs must submit a three (3) year Research Plan to the FRRTC in order to access ECA funds.

Early Career Academic (PhD Holder) Networking/Conference Grant

Funding support for ECAs to attend conferences, visit research institutes or undertake training courses in improving research skills.

New Staff Grants

Funding support for new academic staff (within 12 months of appointment) to assist in establishing their research at the University of Newcastle.

Senior Academic Grant Reviews for ARC & NHMRC

Provides an opportunity for academic staff to meet with experienced senior grant reviewers who will examine their draft external ARC & NHMRC applications and provide verbal and/or written feedback.

Calls for expression of interest to meet with a senior reviewer/s are made via email to all academic staff in September each year

Small Grant SchemeFunding support to facilitate the development of a new research area, or to further develop an existing project grant.Guidelines

Strategic Initiative Research (SIRF)  Scheme

Funding support to facilitate opportunities for Schools/Disciplines to develop and drive strategic initiatives directed at improving research quantum in the faculty.

Early to Mid-Career Researcher Visiting Fellowship Grants Scheme

Provides funding support for travel & accommodation for an ECR/Mid-Career research visitor or visitee who can contribute to a Faculty Research Group/Centre, in terms of grant development, publications and research focus.

Faculty Undergraduate Summer Scholarships 2014/15 (applications close at midnight on Sunday 26th October 2014)

The Faculty of Science and IT Undergraduate Summer Scholarship program is established to enable talented students to explore the world of research.

An Undergraduate Summer research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments.  Scholarship holders will undertake research projects over a 6-week placement.

This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research. Details regarding the current Summer Research Topics (PDF, 628KB) identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.

A large number of scholarships are available valued at $2,000 each. For information on the conditions and how to apply please refer to the Scholarships website.

Please note: Applications for this Scholarship will not be able to be submitted until around Monday 6th October 2014. Please check this site closer to the date for further information. Once applications open you will be able to submit on-line through the Scholarship website.
