Student work

Experiences, groups and projects

Our engineering graduates are highly sought after, with many students landing a job before they even finish their degree. In their final year, students bring theory and practice together in sophisticated research projects.

They also have the opportunity to build important professional and industry networks while gaining real-world experience during 12 weeks of compulsory professional placement.

Our students have access to a whole range of rich experiences during their studies, including the following:

ENGG1500 Introduction to Professional Engineering

All engineering students have the opportunity to complete this core first-year professional practice course. Tackling large-scale global issues from the start of their program, students in ENGG1500 work in teams to develop, pitch and create a project that helps solve real problems.

Newcastle University Women in Engineering (NUWiE)

NUWiE hosts a range of activities and events such as seminars with female graduates and site visits. This group offers students the opportunity to meet likeminded people and be part of a broader network of female engineers.

MedMakers

Students studying medical or other engineering, science and health degrees plus students from areas such as media, communications and commerce are welcome to join the MedMakers, a social, networking and practical group that provides hands-on learning through groundbreaking projects in the medical field.

Get Hacking

Get involved with a hackathon and develop your teamwork, ideation and pitching skills. Sow the seeds for your own startup.

NU Marine

The NU Marine Team contest the international Maritime RobotX competition, against 20+ university teams. The competition centres on the design and manufacture of autonomous systems for a department-of-defence provided WAM-V marine vessel, and involves a range of static (safety) tests and dynamic (on-water) events.

NU Racing

The NU Racing Formula-SAE Team conceives, designs, fabricates a small, formula-style racing car and races it in the SAE-Australasian Formula competition each year.

NU Rocketry

The NU Rocketry team is building a rocket to compete in the Australian Universities Rocket Competition.

UON Formula SAE Team 01:49

Designing, constructing and most importantly -- racing a formula-style car is what Formula SAE is all about.
