How to use direct quotations
Quoting the words of someone else, to support
your own argument, means you are taking responsibility for:
- Using the message in the context of the originating
text
- Accurately transcribing the actual words and
punctuation used in the originating text.
Intentionally altering the content of a
quotation, or using a quotation out of context, is academically
dishonest. Unintentionally altering the content of a quotation,
or using a quotation out of context, is poor scholarship. Either
could be viewed as a breach of academic integrity and result in
penalty.
