Statistics are collections of facts and figures gathered on often very specific topics. They are useful in assignments to support theories and arguments, and to describe a situation or trend.

In Australia, the main source of official statistics is the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The ABS gathers and collates statistics on many aspects of Australian life, including employment, education, health, income, imports, exports and population. The National Census, held every 5 years in Australia, is also an important statistical measure of Australian society.

For further information on Australian statistics check Statistics (ABS), links to other statistical organisations are available at the Statistics web page.
