DEFINITION OF SUMMARISING
Summarising is using your own words to shorten a piece of text so that it includes only the essential information. Summaries have far fewer words than the original, but they still provide a clear indication of the main points made by the author.
Summarising can be achieved by:
- Reading the source until you have a full understanding of the writer's message
- Putting the source aside and writing the message in your own words, being careful to:
- Preserve the meaning of the original
- Avoid using words and phrases that are similar to the original
