Some referencing styles, such as Chicago and AGLC3, require that citations are added into the footnotes area of a document.

To add a citation in a footnote:

Within your Word document, place your cursor at the point where the footnote is to be added
From the Word References menu, select Insert Footnote
The curser will now appear in the footnote area, where the citation can be inserted using one of the methods described for Adding citations to a Word document.
