Biography
I was appointed Professor Emeritus in 2011, having retired from the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education & Arts) and member of the Executive Committee of the University, a position I had held since 2001. Prior to that, I was Dean of Education for 6 years and before that Head of the Department of Education from 1992. During this lengthy term as a University administrator, I was also active in professional work and national associations, serving continuously from 1997-2009 on the Board of the Australian Council of Deans of Education, including as President between 2004 and 2005, and as an Executive member of the Deans of Arts Social Sciences and Humanities from 2006-2009. I also served on the Executive of the NSW Teacher Education Council for many years, including as President between 1998 and 2000. In 2004, I was appointed by the Federal Minister of Education Science and Training to the inaugural Board of the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (later ALTC) and to the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy. I am now a member of the Education Committee of the Central Coast Regional Development Committee and serve as Academic Dean, Broken Bay Institute, Sydney.
In addition to these administrative responsibilities and appointments, I continue to maintain an active research profile, having secured approximately $2m of research funds through the University and/or other public bodies. I am active in research training and publications, having published a number of academic books and over 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters. I currently have 255 Scopus citations, 185 ISI Web of Science citations and over 900 Google Scholar citations. Research expertise
I am qualified in Education, Theology, Anthropology and Philosophy. I have particular expertise in matters of religion, ethics, values and their application to curriculum. This background has led to a particular species of research in education. In the early 1990s, I was involved in the development of professional ethics, especially in medicine, allied with the creation of the inaugural ethics committee for the University. This led to collaborative work in several fields of ethics and bioethics. After being appointed to an administrative role in education, I took much of this background into educational research, so applying philosophical and ethical perspectives to a range of educational issues, including curriculum, religion in education and values education. I have also engaged in higher education focussed research, especially concerned with the role of the doctorate. Across these fields, I now have 255 Scopus citations, 185 ISI citations and over 900 Google Scholar citations.
