Biography
Mirka Miller was awarded PhD from The University of New South Wales in 1990. Since then she has held senior academic positions at the University of New England, and The University of Newcastle, where she was Assistant Dean (Research Postgraduates) and, for a time, the only female academic member of the Faculty of Engineering. Between 2004 and 2008 she was Professor of Computer Science at the University of Ballarat. Since April 2008 she is Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, The University of Newcastle, and the Leader of the GTA research group. Additionally, since 2001 Professor Miller has been Conjoint Professor at the University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Research expertise
Professor Miller's principal areas of research are broadly classified as Graph Theory and Data Security. In Graph Theory she has made considerable advances in the fields of Graph Labellings, Graph Algorithms and Graph Applications. Her work on Extremal Graph Theory has won her international renown. In this difficult and complex area working on fundamental properties of graphs she has published many deep results, even giving her name to a class of graphs, the McKay, Miller, Siran Graphs. With Prof Jozef Siran she is author of the much cited Moore Bound and Beyond: A Dynamic Survey of the Degree, Diameter Problem. She is currently writing a book on Graph Labelling. Professor Miller's other area of research is Data Security, especially in the Security of Statistical Databases.
