Biography
Michael Chapman has been an academic at the University of Newcastle since 2008. He is mainly involved in the Masters of Architecture course, where he is the course coordinator for the first year design courses. He is also the Program Convenor for the Bachelor of Design (Architecture). Michael teaches architectural history and theory and is a design tutor in the final year. His research is focused primarily on the crossovers between art theory and architecture, with a particular interest in the historical avant-garde and its ongoing influence. More recently, he has been concerned with the broader issues of industrialisation and its impact on architectural history and theory. The themes of Marxism, autonomy and the philosophy of the Frankfurt School are a central current in his work. Michael's creative work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and he is a director of the architectural practice hrmphrdt.
