Biography
Ph.D in Communication Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. I specialize in Telecommunications Network Engineering. Since completing my Ph.D I worked for a European Commission's research project known as RACE (Research for Advanced Communications in Europe). My contributions in the research group was to develop MAC protocol known as PRMA for mobile communication networks. After extensive research by our groups (three groups involved) the protocol was developed and deployed in 3G mobile communication systems.
Since 1992 I am working as an academics in two different universities. Currently I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In my current position at the University of Newcastle I have developed a telecommunications network research group as well as undergraduate telecommunications program. Currently the telecommunications network group has a membership of 9 researchers.
I am a senior member of the Communications Society of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a member of the ACM (Association of Computer Machinery). I extensively publish in international journals, conferences and in books.

Research expertise
Main research expertise is in the area of Telecommunications Networks, Wireless Networks, Cognitive and Cooperative Networks and Sensor Networks. I have been working on both infrastructure and ad hoc networks areas. I am also working on the Smart Grid Technology area involving developing of a wide area monitoring and control systems. Within the telecommunications networking area I have mostly concentrated on the MAC (Medium Access Control) and network layer protocols and system design issues. I have also worked on wireless local area networks involving IEEE802.11 standard. I have worked on GSM. GPRS, UMTS, WiMAX and LTE based systems. Currently I have been working on the Cooperative and Cognitive network architectures. We have developed new IP based network architecture to offer seamless mobility and enhanced QoS for heterogeneous wireless networks. Currently we are also working on the low energy communication networking techniques. I am also involved on wireless body are networks and underwater sensor networks.
I am heavily involved in postgraduate research supervision in above areas. So far I have successfully graduated 6 Ph.d, 2 M.E and one postgraduate diploma student.
I have received research funding for three ARC linkage projects and several industrial research projects.

Administrative expertise
I have extensive administration expertise in the university. I have served as course coordinators, program coordinators and the head of the discipline of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications engineering. I have been working as the Telecommunications engineering program convener of last nine years and served as the computer engineering program convener for for two and half years. I have served as the head of the discipline for three and half years. As the head of the discipline I have administered two campuses Callaghan and Singapore at the same time. I have served in many university committees including the faculty board, faculty appeals committe, university appeals committee, university board of IT studies, etc. I have served in many IEEE conference committees as the Technical Program Committee member and also as a vice chairs.

Teaching expertise
My main teaching experience is in the areas of telecommunications, computer and electronics engineering areas. I have been teaching a number of courses on communications engineering, telecommunications networks, wireless systems, electronics design and microprocessor based systems. I have teaching experience both in undergraduate and postgraduate areas. I have taught in all levels on Electrical/Computer/Telecommunications undergraduate programs. I have designed several undergraduate programs, courses and teaching laboratories in above areas. I have developed many new undergraduate final year research projects.
I am heavily involved in the final year project supervisions and teaching in some postgraduate courses. So far I have successfully supervised more 100 final year electrical, computer and telecommunications engineering final year projects.
