Biography

Hubert Hondermarck is Professor of Medical Biochemistry. He obtained a PhD in neurobiochemistry and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California Irvine where he investigated growth factor signalling in neuronal cells using proteomics. He took an academic position at the University of Lille (France) in 1993 and started working on breast cancer cell growth and metastasis. He became full Professor in 1998 and a member of the "Institut Universitaire de France" in 2002. He created and directed for 10 years a research unit of the French Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) studying breast cancer cell signalling. In 2011, he moved to the University of Newcastle Australia, to start a new group investigating the role of neurotrophins and their receptors in various tumours, with a particular interest for their clinical utility as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. His long-term interest is in the relationship between the nervous system and cancer.

He has published 76 PubMed referenced articles on cancer cell biology and cancer proteomics http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=hondermarck. He has edited a book on biomedical and pharmaceutical applications of proteomics http://www.springerlink.com/content/978-1-4020-2322-4/. He has two internationally issued patents and several collaborations and research contracts with biopharmaceutical companies.

He is on the Editorial Board of: Molecular and Cellular Proteomics (ASBMB), Proteomics Clinical Applications (Wiley), Recent Patent on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery (Bentham), Open Cancer Journal (Bentham) and Frontiers in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology (Frontiers Media).

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Human proteome Organization (HUPO) since 2006.

Project title: proNGF and its receptors in cancers.

Description: We have previously identified pro-nerve growth factor as an important player in breast cancer metastasis and the objective of the project will be to explore other types of cancer to determine if proNGF could also be involved and useful as a biomarker and/or therapeutic target.
