Biography
Dr. S. A. Hosseini is a Lecturer and a Faculty Associated Researcher at The Research Institute for Social Inclusion and Wellbeing (RISIW), and Humanities Research Institute (HRI), The University of Newcastle, Australia. He completed his PhD in Sociology and Global Studies (2006) at the Australian National University (ANU). He has conducted research on transnational social movements, global social change, globalist ideologies, Islamism, and transnational identities. Since 2003, he has been teaching at the Australian National University, University of Technology Sydney, University of New South Wales, and the University of Newcastle.
His new book, Alternative Globalizations (2010), establishes a new theory of the (trans)formation of ideas, identities, and solidarities in recent oppositions to capitalist globalization and its ideological foundations. The book contributes to social sciences by introducing new concepts such as "accommodative consciousness", "Interactive solidarities", "Dissident knowledge", "Social Nexuses of inequality", "Ideological Visions", "Transversal Cosmopolitanism". It provides researchers in the areas of social movement and social ideation studies with a new integrative approach which accommodates many unnecessary theoretical disputes.
He has won research grants including the 2010 Bilateral Grant from the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. He has also published articles and presented conference papers on Occupy Wall Street Movement & the Political Economy of Global Financial Crisis (forthcoming), Arab Spring (forthcoming), Sociology of Ideas (2012), Youth Political Identity (2012), Activist Knowledge (2010), Global Justice (2009), Sociology of Dissident Knowledge (2007), Alter-globalization Solidarity (2006), Sociology of Collective Cognition (2003), Rural and Regional Development (1999, 2000), Islamic Conservatism and Neo-Conservatism (2000), Islamist Progressive Political Thoughts (2000), and the Applicability of Social Theories in the Context of Islamic Societies (1999).
Dr. Hosseini's research experience, his specific theoretical perspective, and his Middle Eastern background plays a significance role in research projects concerned with social disparities and marginalization. He is familiar with many Islamic-cultural terms and ideas (Hosseini 1998, 2000a, 2000b). He has been in contact with many Muslim migrants, intellectuals, communities, and student organizations in Sydney and Newcastle. While his cultural-experiential background enhance the cultural sensitivity, his sociological background is important in the contribution of social inclusion to the growing multidisciplinary studies of the Muslim diaspora in the Australia. His works speak to policy analysts, politicians, activists, and social researchers.

Research expertise
As a political and economic sociologist, my main field of research is shaped around the globalization of social movements, uprisings, violence, activism, and revolutions. I am interested in the relation between ideas, identities, political actions and their socio-economic circumstances including new communication and information technologies. How social inequalities, ethnic marginalization, economic disparities, deprivations, and discrimination translate into people's (especially the youth) identities, ideas and collective actions and how political actions in turn influence social change are among the major questions have tried to explore in my studies so far. I have also developed an interest in the impacts of economic and financial policies on community welfare and well-being.

Teaching expertise
Since his appointment in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr Hosseini has established 4 new courses and fully coordinated six courses (SOCA6100, SOCA6120, SOCA3902, SOCA6100, SOCA4090 and SOCA4100) and supervised three research students at the postgraduate level. Based on this sustainably positive teaching experience, he has been able to consolidate his teaching, research and course development skills. This level of productivity has been built upon his 3 years of tertiary teaching at three Go8 universities (including one year fix term Level B lectureship) prior to his appointment at the UoN. Throughout his teaching, he has actively sought mentoring and incorporated suggestions from peer curriculum experts. So too, he has constantly consulted teaching and learning materials, monographs, his own research findings, and academic journal articles for developing and implementing best-practice models and positive student learning outcome.
